What makes text read as AI

Detectors look for statistical patterns. GPTZero describes perplexity as how likely a language model would be to pick the same words, and burstiness as how much that varies across a document. Unlike models, people vary their writing (wording, sentence structures, etc.). GPTZero mentions they currently use a deep-learning model, but still use this as one of the signals.

How to humanize AI text manually, step by step

1. Delete the opening throat-clearing and stock phrases. Before: "In today's fast-paced world, it is important to note that sleep matters." After: "Sleep matters."

   Padding words/phrases that don't really add meaning to a sentence, such as "it is worth noting" and "in conclusion", are common in AI-generated text.

2. Include a detail only you know, such as a number, name or time. Before: "Many students struggle with deadlines." After: "I wrote my last lab report the night before it was due."

   A model can only draw on what it was given, so its examples tend to be generic. Include real specifics, like the number on your last utility bill, the name of a class you're taking, or the town you grew up in. Only add details that are true.

3. Mix short and long sentences. Before: "The app is fast. The app is simple. The app is free." After: "The app is fast and free, and you can learn it in a minute. That's it."

   AI text often has lots of sentences of similar length. Scan through looking for this and if you spot it, combine some sentences or break some up.

4. Say what you think. Before: "There are pros and cons to remote work." After: "Remote work suits me, though I miss the whiteboard."

   AI often tries to tread carefully and mention all points of view evenly. Where you have a point of view, say so and add a sentence on why you feel that way.

5. Fact-check all claims and remove or replace unsupported information. Before: "Studies show most people prefer tea." After: "In our office poll, tea won."

   AI content generators can state falsehoods as fact. Double check all names, numbers, dates and quotes against a source that you can cite and if you can't find a source remove the statement.

6. Read it aloud and fix anything you would not say. Before: "Utilize the feature to facilitate collaboration." After: "Use it to work together."

   Awkward phrasing is less obvious when you're looking at a screen than when you're hearing it out loud. If you stumble over a sentence or wouldn't say it to a friend rewrite it using simpler language.

Using a humanizer tool and how to pick one

A humanizer can speed this up, but results differ by detector. Compare tools on our best ai humanizer leaderboard.

When you compare humanizers, look at more than one number. You should check how they perform against the detector you're interested in. You should also check they haven't altered the meaning of your work. On HumanizerEval, StealthGPT had a quality mean of 83.5%, while Ryne scored 87.5% on quality but passed almost nothing.

ChatGPT prompts vs dedicated humanizers

HumanizerEval has not tried using ChatGPT prompts to humanize AI-generated content, so there's no comparison to be made with other, more specific tools. Dedicated humanizers differ widely, ranging from 80.3% for StealthGPT to 0.7% for Ryne.

How we tested

Per our methodology, all tools received 50 source texts generated by 5 AI models. Each output was scored by Pangram, GPTZero, Originality.ai Turbo, Originality.ai 5.0, ZeroGPT and Winston AI through their own APIs. A strict bypass is a human score above 50%, regardless of the vendor label. Mixed is not an automatic fail.

Whatever you use, finish with your own edit. A tool can change how text reads, but only you can check that it still says what you mean.

Is there an actual way to humanize AI text?

ZeroGPT offers an AI humanizer on its own site. HumanizerEval tests ZeroGPT only as a detector, not its humanizer.

Can Turnitin detect humanized AI text?

Turnitin isn't one of the AI detectors we benchmark, so we don't have any data on how it scores humanized text.
